Frostbite (Vampire Academy, #2)

“Rose loves Dimitri, Dimitri might love Tasha, and Mason would die to be with Rose…

It’s winter break at St. Vladimir’s, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy’s crawling with Guardians—including Rose’s hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if hand-to-hand combat with her mom wasn’t bad enough, Rose’s tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason’s got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa’s head while she’s making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy’s not taking any risks… This year, St. Vlad’s annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.

But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price…”

This was a really nice sequel. Granted, it did have its frustrating moments (such as the relative lack of Dimitri). Rose, however, has not changed one bit. She is still stubborn, she is still feisty, and I still love her sense of humor. What I didn’t really care about was the love triangle. In some cases, it adds to the story, but I didn’t think that was the case here. For me, there was not enough chemistry  between Mason and Rose to justify a love triangle. In my opinion, Rose belongs with Dimitri, and that’s it.

I’m not sure I like Rose’s mother. At points, I just wanted her to go away again. I did get curious to know who Rose’s father is… Perhaps that will be revealed later in the series. Another thing that has me really curious is that bond between Rose and Lissa. Given the titles in this series, I’m guessing answers about that are only going to be given in the fifth book (I do hope I’m mistaken).

(I’m sorry this is such a short review, but real life has been crazy lately, as I’ve started working and still have to adjust to that.)

I think this instalment in the series as a ‘go between’. You know? It’s a great read, but not as great as the first and definitely not as good as what’s to come!

I disagree about what you said about how Mason and Rose lack chemistry. I think the fact that they share so many similarities. They are both funny, sassy and caring makes them cute together. Rose and Dimitri is too obvious, too cliche and too boring.
